Cheap Sidekicks and Cursive Girls

Shaky from the coffee...wired from the sound...ready to take on the World...only because I won't be sleeping for hours if this feeling doesn't go away. Record reviews (I hope): Random scale of randomness... 1 wide awake hour of creativity.  This is probably not worth the time. 2 wide awake hours of creativity.  Ehhh...I'm just not convinced this is the real thing. 3 wide awake hours of creativity.  This is the norm.  Something worth the effort. 4 wide awake hours of creativity.  This is better than the rest, but something else is probably the best. 5 wide awake hours of creativity.  Great, greater, the bestest! Cursive "I Am Gemini" 2 wide awake hours of creativity.  Indie Dream Theater for sure. I admit it.  Years ago I had a musical affair with Cursive.  I came across 2003's "The Ugly Organ" and loved it, loved it, and loved it again!  But as it sometimes happens Cursive and I fell out of love.  Ok so it was me....

Big Haunts Sleep Past the Few

Welcome!  Bienvenidos a mi blog!  How do you say blog in Spanish?  I'm going to have to check Google translator.  Be right back!  Cool.  In Spanish it is blog!  Like you didn't know that was coming.  Today on Fiercely Me (the blog sent from Heaven): I review 3 new records and then tell you why they suck.  No that's too negative.  I might have good things to say too.  Nope.  I don't. Don't forget that I listen one time through the whole record, I give the record an unfair rating from a random and arbitrary rating scale, and then I try to express my feelings about the record with written words. Okay this has gone on way too long!  On to the random and arbitrary rating scale! 1 hour nap.  Not even worth the time it took to try to fall asleep. 2 hour nap.  Not bad but really it could be better. 3 hour nap.  Good.  This should be the standard that others are measured by. 4 hour nap.  Now this...

Nada Finn Life Surf Times

New music!  New music!  New music!  Rock n Roll!  My reviews are set in stone.  The stone that builds this blog.  Blog stones.  Stoners blog.  But I'm not one.  Here is my random record review rating scale: 1 great song.  This may sell as a single on iTunes but it won't carry a record. 2 great songs.  This may get some people's attention but again...do you really want to buy a full-length? 3 great songs.  This is something many artists never accomplish.  Take notice. 4 great songs.  This is a lot of sentences starting with this.  This is worth your cash. 5 great songs.  What?  A sentence that doesn't start with the word this???  Different!  True greatness is on the horizon. Craig Finn "Clear Heart Full Eyes" 3 great songs.  Solid man!  Solid! Craig Finn is the lead singer and lyricist of the band the Hold Steady.  I am not a big fan of that band.  The "talky" voc...

Normal Noble Uncles sing about sex and stuff.

The following reviews are written by a music-obsessed amateur scribe.  If you put any importance or weight into the following opinions you are taking a chance with your music-listening time.  We will not be liable for any injuries or mental anguish caused by the words or word pairings below.  Thank you.  The Fierce Management 1 Beatle - Not worth your time.  Probably not one of the good ones anyways. 2 Beatles - Okay but really it's not what you REALLY want. 3 Beatles - This is good.  This is getting really good.  Can I say really more? 4 Beatles - What everyone wants.  Excellence and craft. 5 Beatles- This is George Martinesque. The shine on the Apple (copywrite, trademarked, do NOT even say the word Apple anymore!) Run Dan Run "Normal" 2 Beatles.  Okay but not...well great. This Charleston, SC indie rock band is not bad.  Huge similarities to Nada Surf.  "Normal" finds the band exploring rich textures, typical rock sou...

Cloud Factory Christmas

Music is like pizza.  If it's really good and it's different than the stuff you had yesterday you have no problem consuming it today.  And by you I mean me. 1 star pizza.  Not really worth your time or effort.  Only good for free. 2 stars pizza.  Sure you can feed the family but is a chain-za good enough? 3 stars pizza.  Now it's turning into a party.  Might even be worth an extra tip. 4 stars pizza.  This is the stuff that restaurants are made of! 5 stars pizza.  You will want to lock yourself in the house alone.  Way too good to share! Kevin Hearn "Cloud Maintenance" 1.5 star pizza.  Warm, gooey, but kinda bland. Kevin Hearn is better know as the keyboard/multi-instrumentalist member of the Barenaked Ladies.  Like the band he calls home this solo album shows some weak spots.  He is a good keyboard player.  I will give him that.  However the lyrics, vocals, and overall songwriting are all a little too...

Christmas is coming...RUN!!!

Christmas is around the corner...ready to mug you for your cash and credit cards. I listen to some streaming "records".  I give my opinion.  You reap rewards a-plenty. Goofy rating scale: 1 Christmas present. Probably not worth the time it takes to open it. 2 Chrismas presents. Okay but c'mon Mom...where's the rest??? 3 Christmas presents. Cool.  It's gonna be an okay Christmas after all. 4 Christmas presents.  Wow.  You shouldn't have!  No.  You should have. 5 Christmas presents.  Santa Claus came to town and left his bag in your house! The Lower 48 "Where All Maps End" 2 Christmas presents.  Weak sauce. This band tends to get compared to the Arcade Fire but isn't that really like comparing stepped on peanuts to crunchy Jiff?  It's nothing like the real thing.  This is mediocre, strummy, wandering acousticana songs that don't get close to jumping off the record.  Boring is a more accurate description.  Not...

Hysterical Ashes & Fire

I listen to a new record streaming over the Internets.  I write my initial reaction.  I give it a meaningless rating from a silly rating scale.  I write I a lot of times. 1 Superbowl victory - "Eh." 2 Superbowl victories - "Good but not great." 3 Superbowl victories - "Now you have something worth talking about." 4 Superbowl victories - "You are the MAN!  I spell M!" 5 Superbowl victories - "You are not even human!  You are a god!" Clap Your Hands Say Yeah "Hysterical" 2 Superbowl victories.  Sprawling but same-y. The blog darlings return with their first album in four years.  They are called indie rock.  Noisy pop.  It's all a little too 80's for my taste.  The record is way too long.  Sprawling but still it manages to have a same-yness throughout that makes it simply boring.  Highlights: None to speak of after one listen. Ryan Adams "Ashes and Fire" 1 Superbowl victory. No Doze please! This ...
