Drive-By Truckers “Go Go Boots” 5 Cold beers on a warm patio. Grandpa just said you are his favorite!

DBT’s newest release starts out with the song “I Do Believe”. It is an upbeat pop-ish song that seems to declare, “This new record is something different from the Truckers.” But the next couple of songs tell a different story. DBT likes soul music. DBT likes to take it’s time and play a song for a while so there is plenty of room for some tasty solos. “Cartoon Gold” is an upbeat country song. “Everybody Needs Love” is a soul inspiring possible hit. Drive-By Truckers are multi-dimensional, talented songwriters, skillful story tellers, and most importantly a solid rock band that has yet to let me down. “Go Go Boots” finds the Truckers at their best. I hope they release new music for many years to come. Highlights: “Used to Be a Cop”, “Pulaski”, “Mercy Buckets”, and pretty much the whole record.

Yuck “Yuck” 3 Cold beers on a warm patio. It’s nice to have goals but it doesn’t mean you are going to hit any of them.

The band made up of members from New Jersey, Hiroshima, and London release their highly anticipated first full-length influenced by Dinosaur Jr. and Sparklehorse. Sounds great to me! But is it great? No. But not bad either. I love Dino Jr. and Sparklehorse so any band striving to sound like those bands is okay in my book. However, Yuck needs two things: A better band name and better songs. Nothing is really grabbing me here. It sounds like background music at a party with cool people who know more about music than you do. “What is this playing right now?” “It’s a band called Yuck. They sound like Dino Jr. and Sparklehorse.” “It’s not bad.” “Yeah it’s alright.” Highlights: “Georgia” and “Operation”.

The Dears “Degeneration Street” 0 Cold beers on a warm patio. Why even have a warm patio?

This is the fifth studio album by the Canadian indie band the Dears. I don’t know if I picked the wrong afternoon to check it out but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…
Highlights: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Eddie Spaghetti “Sundowner” 3 Cold beers on a warm patio. Like a family party at your house on a Sunday. Nice once in a great while but not every weekend.

The Supersucker’s singer/bassist returns with his latest solo record. It’s exactly what you would expect from him: songs about girls, driving, and cowboy boots. It seems like a good record to listen to when you are drinkin’ in your backyard on a warm spring day. I’ll try that out in a month or two and get back to you. Highlights: “Party Dolls and Wine” and “Everybody’s Girl”.
