Thinking of you and record reviews!

Image
All records are listened to one time completely through by me. Reviews are my first impression and could change with more listens but probably won’t. 0 Classic Big Wheels – Horrible! Who would want to live in a world where there were no Big Wheels? 1 Classic Big Wheel – Might work for someone but it still seems empty to me. 2 Classic Big Wheels – Better. At least now we can have a race. 3 Classic Big Wheels – Cool! Now we are talking! 4 Classic Big Wheels – Call your friends! It’s time to party! 5 Classic Big Wheels – What??? Are you kidding??? Genius! Nothing could be better! (Okay smartass. I know 6 would be better but hey…it’s a 0 to 5 scale. Gotta stop somewhere.) braam “Living Room” 3.85 Classic Big Wheels – You can’t take the Midwest out of this with the jaws of life. Important note: This is the first record that was sent to me by a member of the band who has read my reviews. However that will not influence what I write about it. Ok so maybe it will a littl

Will Facebook and Twitter Miss Me When I'm Gone?

This one might be better for a philosopher or a psychiatrist to try and tackle. However this topic has me so curious that I thought, “Why not just put something out there in a blog and see if anyone has any insight out there?” I was on Facebook a while back and I noticed that a FB friend of mine had posted something about a friend of hers who had died unexpectedly. I looked him up by the name that she posted and I took a look at his wall. Not really out of morbid curiosity to see what happened, but mostly to see who he was. What kind of guy was he? Married? Single? Did he have kids? While checking out his wall I noticed that he had tons of postings from FB friends. He seemed to be a very popular guy. He had hundreds of FB friends and most of them were posting on his wall. I noticed that there were a few different kinds of postings. A few of the postings were just mentioning that they just saw him the other day and then would ask if anyone knew what had happened to him. The other ki

Fourth time’s a…oh whatever. Record reviews!

Records are streamed one time over the lonely Internets on Spinner.com. Reviews are a first impression and could possibly change with multiple listens but who am I kidding? No one cares anyways. Yadda, yadda, blah, blah, blah…0 to 5 scale just like everyone else but different. 0 pink paisley Telecasters – This record is sad. Just like the World would be blah, blah, blah… 1 pink paisley Telecasters – One is okay but not worth blah, blah, blah… 2 pink paisley Telecasters – Not much new here. Two are better than one but blah. 3 pink paisley Telecasters – The record is worth your time but probably won’t blah, blah, blah, blah. 4 pink paisley Telecasters – This is getting so good that it might even be too blah, blah. 5 pink paisley Telecasters – YES!!! (blah.) Girls “Broken Dreams Club” 3.5 pink paisley Telecasters. Good stuff Petey. I had to Wiki Girls: Girls is an indie rock band from San Francisco, California. Made up of two key members, Christopher Owens and Chet &

Third time is a charm. Record reviews!

Records are streamed one time over the fabulous Internets of Syrinx. Reviews are a first impression and could possibly change with multiple listens but really who has time for that anymore? Because of overwhelming complaints (ok it was just one person) my review rating system is being simplified. There will no longer be review ratings below zero. I’m told that a negative rating is as easy to understand as the reason that Snookie is a beloved superstar. So with this review I will be using a typical zero to five scale. Or maybe a not-so-typical zero to five scale. 0 soft puppy noses – The record is awful just like a life without soft puppy noses. 1 soft puppy nose – Better than nothing but probably not worth your time and energy. 2 soft puppy noses – Now we are talking. Two give you more of a reason to play. 3 soft puppy noses – The record is worth your time but probably won’t knock your socks off. 4 soft puppy noses – This is getting so good that it might even be too much of

2nd Record Review EVAH...AND THERE IS PIE!

Image
All records are streaming over those fantastic Internets and listened to only once.   The review is a first reaction and should not be taken to heart.   Got that Milwaukee bands? -10 baby strawberry and honey pies (Not only do you not have the delicious goodness of even one baby strawberry and honey pie for yourself but you owe 10 to someone else!   That sucks big time!) +0 baby strawberry and honey pies (Your life is boring and so is this record.) +10 baby strawberry and honey pies (So much flavor!   How can you possibly keep this to yourself?!) Eric and Magill “All Those I Know” +2 baby strawberry and honey pies.   Tasty but not delicious. I didn’t know anything about Eric and Magill when I gave this record a listen today.   This is definitely for fans of Volcano Choir, Bon Iver, and all the other indie folk pop bands that are gaining ground these days.   Some of the early songs on the record reminded me too much of the wimpy synth pop bands in the 80’s that I couldn’t stand.   A

1st Record Reviews EVAH!

-10 Chorizos: Supercolossalannoyingpieceofsh!t (Stay far, far away!) 0 Chorizos: Borinzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz +10 Chorizos: Sell your home and all of your stuff and make a pilgrimage to the place that this masterpiece was created! NOW!! I listened to the following records from beginning to end (for the most part) on Spinner.com at work while I puttered on the computer wishing I was on an island in the Caribbean. Warning: This is a first reaction to the record. You know sometimes it takes a while for a great record to grow on you so don’t kill yourself if you don’t agree with my insightful review! First up today is: Meridene “Something Like Blood”  +7 Chorizos! Spicy and gritty at the same time! Meridene is one of those groups that is full of possibility. They could possibly be a great band. They could possibly release a great album. They could possibly not give a sh!t what I have to say about them. “Something Like Blood” is a very cool

It's Official: My Favorite Album of All Time!

Image
Rock critics tend to make bold statements like, “The Best Album of the Year”, or “The 100 Best Albums of All Time”. When what they really mean to say is, “This is my favorite album right now but ask me next week and it will probably be something different.” Every single person on this planet has their own specific taste in music. When someone tells you that your taste in music sucks they really should be telling you that your taste in music is nothing like theirs and they feel better than you because of it. Just because I don’t like Katy Perry’s songs does that mean they all suck? I find this topic very interesting but this is not what I want to get into right now. I just want to make my bold statements that prove I have GREAT taste in music and you don’t. The best album ever recorded and released ever, ever, ever is by a guy from Chicago that a lot of people probably have never heard of. His name is Devin Davis and the album is called “Lonely People of the World, Unite!” First of

10 Most Annoyingly Overexposed Pop Stars or Songs of 2010...so far.

As you might have guessed from my first blog ever I am not a big fan of the mainstream pop music that is played on Top 40 radio these days. Yet through circumstances beyond my control I am forced to listen to Top 40 radio almost every day. Because of this I hear a lot of these songs repeated over and over and over again. Some I really don’t have a problem with (Justin Bieber should annoy me but for some reason I don’t hate all his songs). If you said that some songs, and the pop stars who sing them, make me want to shoot every radio for a mile around (and myself in the head) then you win the PRIZE! A look at my list of the 10 Most Annoyingly Overexposed Pop Stars or Songs of 2010…so far. Coming in at #10: Auto-tune effect on vocals. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about auto-tune is an effect that studios use on vocals that give the singer kind of a weird, spacey sound when the pitch is varied. For instance I just heard “Dynomite” by Taio Cruz and auto-tune is a

Birth of an Indie Rocker

One of my first memories of music was putting on my 45 single of “Saturday Night” by the Bay City Rollers and pretending to perform the song with my brother and sister. In fifth grade I signed up to play the string bass in South Milwaukee’s music program. I guess I took to playing an instrument fairly quickly as I would beat out older kids for first chair early on in Junior High and High School. I guess all that lip syncing and fake strumming helped! At that time my musical tastes were all over the board. Since I was a bass player (and just starting to play electric bass guitar) I liked just about any band that had a really good bass player. Some of my early “idols” were John Taylor (Duran Duran), Stanley Clarke, John Entwistle (The Who), Chris Squire (Yes), and last but most important was Geddy Lee (Rush). I was so obsessed with Geddy’s playing that before I was lucky enough to score my first bass guitar I would “pluck” along with his moving bass lines on the wooden frame of my bed fo
