Summertime Rolls-Music reviews

Um yeah.  I listen to the record from beginning to end one time.  Next I write down my initial impressions of the record.  Lastly I post my reviews on the mysterious Internets and wait for you to tell me how clueless I am.  Let's commence.

1 solo homerun (barely worth the effort anymore)
2 run homerun (good.  can make a difference but probably won't.)
3 run homerun (now we are talking.  You might win with this one.)
4 Grandslam (You are the man!  Or woman.  But probably man.)
5 Grandslam walk-off homerun (You won the game!  Yes you!  Multi-million dollar contract is on it's way!)

Givers "In Light" 2 run homerun.  Poppy and fun but not great.
Straight from the bio: Lafayette, Louisiana based indie-poppers' debut record combines a perfect mix of shimmering pop and summer-strong songs.  Okay so it's shimmery and poppy.  Maybe even a little summery.  But as I ask with a lot of the records I review, "Where's the hooks?"  This one sounds cool and might even be a hit at your next backyard bbq.  But come on!  You won't be humming anything from this record after everyone goes home.  Highlights: Lose the pseudo-African-Vampire Weekend guitars and we'll talk.

The Vaccines "What Did You Expect From the Vaccines?" 3 run homerun.  Better than your bedroom demos.
I'm not a big fan of Brttish buzz-bands that sound British and gather that "right" kind of buzz.  This band might be the only exception to that rule.  Yes they sound a little British.  Yes the guitars are reverbed out and there's some fuzz in between the lines.  But unlike most of those other cool Brit-bands these guys have some hooks and some really strong lyrics.  This one is worth checking out.
Highlights: "If You Wanna" and "Norgaard".

Black Lips "Arabia Mountain" 4 Grandslam!  Go Daddy Go!
This is what Spinner says about this record: The Atlantia, G.A. garage rockers get sunny and summery for this new record of brash and fun tunes reminiscent of the Stooges. Atlantia G.A.???  Are these guys from Earth?  But at least Spinner got something right.  This record is full of brash and fun tunes.  This is garage pop for people who want a little more pop than garage.  Highlights: "Modern Art" and "Raw Meat".

Dawes "Nothing Is Wrong" 4 Grandslam.  Really, really, really good record shows Dawes is getting stronger.
If I didn't know that this was a brand new record from a somewhat newish band I would swear that this is a classic rock gem.  Solid beats, gritty guitars, warm organ, and catchy vocal melodies make this a very strong record and gives me hope.  Hope that someday all the kids will get it like Dawes gets it.  Highlights: "Time Spent In Los Angeles" and "So Well".
