Christmas is coming...RUN!!!

Christmas is around the corner...ready to mug you for your cash and credit cards.

I listen to some streaming "records".  I give my opinion.  You reap rewards a-plenty.

Goofy rating scale:

1 Christmas present. Probably not worth the time it takes to open it.
2 Chrismas presents. Okay but c'mon Mom...where's the rest???
3 Christmas presents. Cool.  It's gonna be an okay Christmas after all.
4 Christmas presents.  Wow.  You shouldn't have!  No.  You should have.
5 Christmas presents.  Santa Claus came to town and left his bag in your house!

The Lower 48 "Where All Maps End" 2 Christmas presents.  Weak sauce.

This band tends to get compared to the Arcade Fire but isn't that really like comparing stepped on peanuts to crunchy Jiff?  It's nothing like the real thing.  This is mediocre, strummy, wandering acousticana songs that don't get close to jumping off the record.  Boring is a more accurate description.  Not everyone with access to a cello and an acoustic guitar is worth 30 some minutes of your time.  Highlights: "Interlude II (Nepal)" is a little GBV-y but somehow manages to get boring like the rest of the songs.

Ross and the Wrongens "Life in the Loos" 2.5 Christmas presents. Thanks but where's the rest?

Happy, poppy, indie rock.  It's okay.  Nothing special.  This record has a bit of a local band feel to it.  Songwriting is only okay.  Playing is nothing special.  It's not bad but wow it's nowhere near great.  Highlights: "Summer Sun" has some nice keys.

Anthony Hamilton "Back To Love" 3.5 Christmas presents.  Some really good stuff if you dig down a bit.

Anthony Hamilton has one of the best voices in R&B today.  In the opening track he spends way to much time singing falsetto which is a shame.  Sets the wrong mood for a good record.  The 2nd tune thankfully sets things straight.  Backing music is tight and sparse with a lot of room to breathe.  His voice is as strong and beautiful as ever.  (Yes a guy can call another guy's voice beautiful.)  He hasn't released an album since 2008 but this record is worth the wait.  Look for him on an awards show near you.  Highlights: "Writing on the Wall", "Woo",  "Mad", and more...
